Why visit Skopje?

Skopje is one of the smaller European capitals, making it an accessible destination where visitors won’t feel overwhelmed. With a population of 422,000, the city is nestled in the Vardar River valley, symbolised by its iconic 15th-century stone bridge spanning the river.

Travellers can also explore the Kale Fortress, which dates back to the 6th century and offers stunning panoramic views of the city and the river below. The 16th-century Clock Tower (Saat Kula) and the Old Bazaar (an important Balkan trading hub since the 1200s) are also must-sees.

Those interested in the Ottoman era shouldn’t miss the Mustafa Pasha Mosque. Another key site is the memorial house of Mother Teresa, born here in 1910 under Ottoman rule as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu to Albanian parents.

In addition to these highlights, Skopje features a wide array of churches and mosques. Its impressive main square, along with the surrounding triumphal arch and grand architecture, provides further appeal for visitors.
