Wizz Air nearly doubles weekly flights on busy Budapest route

From 31 March, Wizz Air will run its Brașov-Budapest service every single day, the Brașov-Vidombák International Airport announced on Monday.

Wizz Air increases frequency

The airport, which serves Szeklerland too, posted on Facebook that the low-cost carrier will ramp up from four flights a week to daily departures from the Transylvanian city to the Hungarian capital.

Wizz Air launched the Budapest-Brașov route on 2 July 2024, and it quickly became one of the busiest from this hub near Szeklerland. From last October, frequencies rose from three to four weekly, the Hungarian New Agency wrote.

The south Transylvanian airport also revealed on Monday that it will start three weekly flights to Rome from 28 January. From 1 June, the Nuremberg service will increase to six times a week.

48% passenger number rise

Adrian Veștea, president of the Brașov county council that runs the airport, said in early January that Romania’s newest airfield saw passenger numbers jump 48 per cent in 2025 compared to the previous year, handling 337,353 travellers. Operators are optimistic for 2026, he added, as the facility has lived up to expectations with rising traffic and ongoing expansion.

Brașov-Vidombák International Airport opened in June 2023 as Romania’s first greenfield facility built from scratch since the fall of communism. Local Szekler councils backed its creation, arguing it plugs the compact Hungarian-speaking region into the global travel network. Operators eye a medium-term target of one million passengers a year.
