Good news: Wizz Air resumes flights to eastern Mediterranean capital city

The Hungarian airline suspended its Amman route amid escalating armed conflicts in the Middle East. Now, Jordan’s Tourism Board has confirmed that Wizz Air will soon restart the service.

Wizz Air returns to a key eastern Mediterranean city

A brief Facebook post published on Budflyer referenced a press release issued yesterday. According to Jordan’s Tourism Board, both Wizz Air and Ryanair will return to the Jordanian market for the 2025–2026 winter season after suspending their summer flights. Wizz Air, for example, will relaunch its service between Budapest and Amman next week, on 26 August. The route will operate twice weekly throughout the year.

The airline had decided in June to suspend flights to both Tel Aviv and Amman due to the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East. On 13 June, a Budapest–Amman flight was forced to turn back mid-air when Jordanian airspace was suddenly closed. At the time, Wizz Air planned to resume the route on 15 September, but the date has now been brought forward by several weeks.

The Tel Aviv route was also originally scheduled to restart in September, yet Wizz Air resumed flights to the Israeli city as early as 8 August.

Wizz Air aims to regain investor confidence in two years

Wizz Air recently announced that it would exit the United Arab Emirates and close its Abu Dhabi base to refocus on its Central and Eastern European markets, targeting growth across the continent. The airline cited bureaucratic hurdles in the Middle East and Asia that have delayed its expansion plans. It also highlighted extreme heat and the regional security situation as challenges to its operations.

Wizz Air CEO József Váradi has stated that the company must stabilise its operations within two years under the new strategy in order to regain investor confidence. As a result, the airline is expected to reduce its fleet of long-haul aircraft to significantly fewer than the 47 previously announced. The first step under the new strategy is the launch of a new base in Bratislava, which may lead to reduced traffic at Budapest Airport.
