Wizz Air sets sights on ultra low-cost flights to Dubai – and they won’t be comfortable
Hungarian budget airline Wizz Air is planning to revolutionise long-haul travel with its ambitious expansion into the Gulf region. The carrier is eyeing the possibility of operating the first ultra low-cost flight from London to Dubai, utilising its new Airbus A321XLR long-range aircraft.
The A321XLR, with a maximum flying range of up to 11 hours, is set to open new possibilities for Wizz Air. According to The Independent, this aircraft will enable the airline to operate mid-haul routes to popular Middle Eastern cities, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Wizz has already ordered 47 XLR aircraft, signalling its commitment to this expansion strategy.
Wizz Air has recently announced several new routes:
- Non-stop flights from London Gatwick to Medina, Saudi Arabia, starting 1 August 2025
- Flights between London Gatwick and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, commencing 31 March 2025 (the airline’s longest UK route to date)
The typical one-way fare for the Gatwick-Jeddah route is expected to be around EUR 164 during spring and summer.
Expect a budget travel experience
According to The Times, passengers opting for Wizz Air’s budget flights to the Middle East should be prepared for a no-frills experience: no reclining seats, no complimentary food and drink, and no checked baggage included in the base fare. Despite these limitations, travelers may still save significantly on their journey costs. Marion Geoffroy, Wizz Air’s UK managing director, suggests that for long-haul trips, it might be more economical for passengers to purchase necessities at their destination rather than packing extensively.
A Wizz spokesperson has confirmed to The Independent that the airline is exploring other exciting destinations across the Gulf as they expand their XLR routes. The addition of the A321XLR to their fleet marks a major milestone for Wizz Air in the UK, enabling them to connect Central and Western Europe with the East at affordable prices.
