Great news! Wizz Air to launch Budapest-Mumbai flight

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in New Delhi on Tuesday that Hungarian low-fare carrier Wizz Air will launch a direct, daily flight connecting Budapest and Mumbai before year-end.

In a statement issued by his ministry, Szijjártó said the launch of a direct flight between Budapest and New Delhi could follow, adding that the first step toward making the necessary changes to a bilateral aviation agreement had been taken.

After talking with several ministers in the Indian government, he said the lack of a direct flight connecting Hungary and India was a significant obstacle to advancing bilateral trade and economic cooperation. A direct flight could, he added, give new impetus to business, education, diplomatic, and tourism ties.

He, therefore, welcomed the fact that this time, all existing agreements have been concluded to enable Wizz Air to launch a direct flight between Budapest and Mumbai seven days a week this year. “The most populous country in the world, one of the fastest growing countries in the world, will now be directly accessible from Hungary in a few months, and we are now in talks to have a flight between New Delhi and Budapest. This will require an amendment to our bilateral aviation agreement. Today we have taken the first step in this direction,” he added. He stressed that direct non-stop connections will give a huge boost to business, learning, diplomatic and tourism relations.

“The largest Indian companies are making a series of modern investments. They employ tens of thousands of workers in Hungary. And now they are increasingly moving from manufacturing to R&D, bringing their investments in research and development of cutting-edge technologies to Hungary and creating jobs for Hungarian researchers and engineers,” he said.

Szijjártó said Hungary and India had established “outstanding cooperation” based on mutual respect, producing big economic benefits.

Indian-owned companies employ tens of thousands of people in Hungary and have expanded their local activities from manufacturing to R+D, he added.

Bilateral trade between Hungary and India will reach around USD 1.5bn in 2025, a new record, he said. Hungarian companies, such as soft drink maker Hell Energy and defence and space industry company BHE Bonn Hungary, already have a presence in India, as do a number of Hungarian companies in the healthcare industry, he added.
