After a year, there is still no suspect of the military grenade accident happened in Hungary

Change language:

More than a year after a serious training accident at a Hungarian military site, authorities have yet to question any suspects, despite completing an evaluation of the available evidence. The case concerns a hand grenade explosion that occurred in March 2025 at the Hungarian Defence Forces’ training ground in Újdörögd, which made the victim lose both of her hands.

Government official permamently disabled by a hand grenade

According to written responses from Chief Prosecutor Gábor Bálint Nagy to Members of Parliament, the Győr Regional Investigative Prosecutor’s Office has finished reviewing the evidence.

However, no individual has been formally identified or interrogated as a suspect. The prosecution is expected to outline its legal conclusions in a forthcoming decision that will formally close the investigation phase.

Severe injuries during voluntary training

The incident involved a 29-year-old female government official participating in a military training programme (that was said to be voluntary) designed for civil servants.

During a live grenade-throwing exercise, the explosive detonated in her hand, causing catastrophic injuries. She lost both hands and sustained multiple shrapnel and facial wounds, requiring emergency surgery after being airlifted to hospital in life-threatening condition.

A military instructor present at the scene was also injured in the blast. The programme was immediately suspended following the accident, according to 24.hu. In addition, all grenade-related training activities within the armed forces were halted pending a full review.

Technical fault ruled out, responsibility unclear

A parallel investigation by the Ministry of Defence examined the batch of grenades used during the exercise. Officials concluded that there was no manufacturing defect, effectively ruling out technical failure as the cause.

Despite this, the question of responsibility remains unresolved. The ongoing criminal procedure focuses on negligent endangerment resulting in permanent disability, but prosecutors have yet to determine whether any individual or authority can be held accountable.

Back then, the case became a hot topic instantly, especially regarding the nature of participation in such training programmes and whether adequate safety measures were in place.
