152,000 people blew up the VOLT Festival in Sopron – PHOTO GALLERY
It was impossible to find accommodation in Sopron and its surrounding areas, including nearby villages in Austria, during the Telekom VOLT Festival. A variety of eclectic music characterised this year’s festival. Perhaps this is the reason why a lot more people purchased day tickets than in previous years.
“For Thursday’s program featuring Iron Maiden, tickets sold out weeks earlier, with 40,000 people attending this concert at VOLT. The Depeche Mode concert on opening night was also nearly full house, and so was the closing night on Saturday. Nearly 152,000 people attended over the five days of the 26. Telekom VOLT Festival” said Lobenwein Norbert, the festival’s Founder and Chief Organizer.
Despite the rainy start to the festival, people were not bothered at all. In fact, there was a magical atmosphere at the Depeche Mode concert, for instance, as everybody was dancing and rocking in the rain with or without clothes. It has been a while since VOLT started out this muddy, but the weather definitely bettered in the second part of the event.
The days were centred around different themes, which seemed to be working and dazzled the lovers of different musical genres.
“There were almost 500 programs at this year’s VOLT. In addition to the wide variety of programs offered, it is also worth mentioning that from now on VOLT will take on an important message each year, which was autism this year. Altogether 30,000 guests supported the ‘Út a Mosolyért Alapítvány’ (Road to Smiles Foundation),” added Zoltán Fülöp, VOLT’s other Founder.
During the festival, the chair of Chester Bennington and Linkin Park was inaugurated in the downtown area of Sopron, while the chair of Depeche Mode will be added to the collection next year.
Many festival-goers mentioned that they felt like they travelled back in time to some of the previous festivals – in a positive sense.
The changes made it seem a bit more modest, but still able to satisfy all needs. For instance, this year the Petőfi Music Awards show was not held at VOLT, it will be held at its “little brother” Strand Festival in August.
All in all, the small changes that were executed this year created a lovely and familiar environment.
