Hungarian short film nominated for an Academy Award

Index.hu writes that the nominees for the 2017 Academy Awards were announced Tuesday afternoon (Hungarian time). If you’ve been keeping up with the current movie season, you probably won’t be surprised by the list, but we are most happy for the Hungarian short film (live action) nomination that Kristóf Deák received for his movie Sing (Mindenki). After the success of Son of Saul, we’ll have another movie to cheer for, on the 26^th of February.

Sing and the other four nominees of the short film (live action) category were chosen out of 137 movies. Kristóf Deák’s movie is about a girl (Dorka Gáspárfalvi) who goes to a new school, where everything seems to be going great in the beginning. She makes friends with another girl (Dorottya Hais) and gets accepted to the school’s famous choir. But it soon turns out that the teacher leading the choir (Zsófia Szamosi) has a unique way to avoid false notes.

The movie has already won festival prizes in Tokyo, Chicago and Berlin. Only one Hungarian movie has ever been nominated in this category before: István Szabó’s test movie, Concert, from 1963. This is what Index wrote about Sing: “Kristóf Deák’s movie cheers you up, because Sing gives back your faith in goodness, solidarity, helpfulness and sympathy. (…) The kid actors are exceptionally great, the movie addresses both children and adults, and every moment is pervaded by music.”

The opponents of Sing in the category are the French Ennemis Intérieurs, the Swiss La Femme et le TGV, the Spanish Timecode and the Danish Silent Nights.

It was obvious that organisers wanted to avoid last year’s #oscarsowhite criticism, so there are several outstanding movies nominated with not only white actors. Denzel Washington and Viola Davis are nominated for Fences, Ruth Nega is nominated for Loving, Dev Patel for Lion, Octavia Spencer for Hidden Figures and Mahershala Ali for Moonlight.

La La Land’s 14 nominations is not surprising, the question is how many Oscars they will get. Expectedly, it won’t win the big categories, because Natalie Portman’s award for Jackie is almost guaranteed, still it will probably take home 6-7 statues at least.

Meryl Streep got her 16^th nomination, which she gets from sport or respect at minimum, no one will overtake her for a while. The closest to her is Jack Nicholson with 12 nominations, followed by Cate Blanchett, Judi Dench, Jane Fonda and Kate Winslet with 7 nominations. Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea, Hidden Figures, Lion dominate the big categories, it would be nice if the distribution of the awards was a bit more diverse than at the Golden Globes rocked by La La Land.
