Jobbik eyes hard times ahead, ‘structural changes’
Budapest (MTI) – Jobbik is planning “structural changes” within the party ahead of the 2018 general election, and the next three or four months will be “crucial”, György Szilágyi, a lawmaker of the opposition party, said on Thursday.
At a party rally at the end of January, Jobbik leader Gábor Vona promised a “new era of reform”. Vona, who has been pushing Jobbik towards the political centre, faced a demonstration by activists of the outlawed Új Magyar Gárda.
Szilágyi told MTI after a news conference in Gyöngyös, in northern Hungary, that Jobbik must be prepared for the “next attack on the party” by ruling Fidesz. He insisted that Jobbik, unlike ruling Fidesz and the Socialists, is working on a manifesto.
A recent poll of polls conducted by the site of the Nezőpont Institute shows Jobbik, once the leading opposition force, has weakened by 4 percentage points compared with its performance in April 2014. With 11 percent support, the party is now almost level pegging with the opposition Socialists.
