Hungary’s natural population decrease was 33,800 in 2016
Budapest, February 23 (MTI) – Hungary’s population decline slowed down in 2016 as the number of births rose by 1.5 percent from the previous year to 93,100 and the number of deaths dropped by 3.6 percent to 126,900, the Central Statistical Office said on Thursday, based on preliminary figures.
Hungary’s population decline accelerated in the previous year.
The natural population decrease was 33,800 in 2016, down by 15.5 percent from 40,007 in the previous year.
KSH estimates that with the net effects of international migration Hungary’s population was 9.799 million at the end of 2016.
There were 51,800 marriages in Hungary in 2016, up by 12 percent compared to 2015. The number of marriages has been rising continuously since 2011 and was the highest last year since 1996.
Last year there were 3.9 infant deaths recorded for every 1,000 live births compared to 4.2 infant deaths a year earlier. The ratio of infant deaths was at an all-time low.
