Hungarian government: Budapest will still bid to host Olympics in future
Budapest, April 8 (MTI) – All sports investment projects originally planned for the 2024 Olympics will be completed and Budapest will again bid to host the Games in the future, the government commissioner in charge of the bid told professional portal insidethegames.biz.
“The government confirmed after we withdrew the bid that every planned venue will still be built,” Balazs Fürjes said. “It means the 2024 bid can be relevant in 2028 or 2032”, he added.
“Budapest will definitely come back to bid for the Olympic Games,” Fürjes said, adding that “it’s a 120-year dream.”
This includes the main Olympic Stadium along the banks of the River Danube, which could be the venue for the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships which Budapest wants to host in 2023. Fürjes has already held talks about this with IAAF President Sebastian Coe at a SportAccord conference in Aarhus, insidethegames said.
Fürjes told MTI in a statement later on Saturday that bids by Budapest to host the Olympics in either 2028 or 2032 “are not on the agenda nor are any such preparations being made”. The statement was issued in response to reports that Budapest intended to bid to host the Games in 2028 or 2032.
“As it has been said in the past, the government plans to build several necessary sports venues independently of the Olympics and these plans have been confirmed several times,” he said. “If Hungary’s 120-year-old Olympic dream one day becomes reality, it will entail minimum costs with regard to the venues,” he added.
