Hungarian National Council of Transylvania joins European Language Equality Network
Targu-Mures, October 25 (MTI) – The Hungarian National Council of Transylvania (EMNT) has joined the European Language Equality Network (ELEN) as a full member.
The partnership agreement of the two organisations was signed on the sidelines of a conference in Targu-Mures (Marosvasarhely), Romania on Saturday by David Hicks, general secretary of ELEN, which represents 44 language communities, and Krisztina Sandor, executive chairman of EMNT.
Sandor said EMNT has joined an organisation that will help them place pressure on Bucharest in the interest of protecting the rights of language communities.
Hicks said the aim was to have the Hungarian language declared an official regional language in Romania. He said ELEN also aims to have the required percentage of minority population ensuring the right to use the mother tongue in public administration lowered from the current 20 percent to 6 percent.
