Fidesz: Hungary committed to sovereign, independent, democratic Ukraine
Budapest/Riga (MTI) – The sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine is the cornerstone of transatlantic security and so Hungary is committed to a European and democratic Ukraine, Zsolt Nemeth, head (Fidesz) of parliament’s foreign affairs committee, said during a two-day visit to Latvia, where he met parliamentary representatives of the Visegrad Group, Scandinavian countries and Iceland, the Baltic States, Benelux states, as well as Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova.
They agreed that Europe had been unprepared for the war that broke out between Russia and Ukraine, which had resulted in a new geopolitical situation, Nemeth noted. Europe must give a response to this, and a new strategy must be worked out in a way which completely reviews Europe’s security strategy that has remained unchanged since 2003, he told MTI on Monday.
In light of the conflict, the situation of the Eastern Partnership initiative has also changed, he insisted. The future of the initiative must be reconsidered, he said, adding that countries which fulfil relevant conditions must be given an outlook to a future in Europe.
In respect of Russia, Nemeth said a new cold war should be avoided while at the same time it must be made clear that “Russia again dividing Europe into spheres of interest is unacceptable”.
