Survey: Most central Europeans believe Hungary is heading in right direction

A survey by Nézőpont Institute shows that nearly one and a half times more central and eastern Europeans believe that Hungary is heading in the right direction than the number of those who think the opposite, daily Magyar Idők said on Thursday.

The survey commissioned by the paper polled people’s opinion in ten countries about European Union migrant quotas, receiving illegal migrants, the role of US financier George Soros and Hungary’s migrant policy. Nézőpont carried out the survey in Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia in June.

A sweeping majority is against the mandatory migrant quota in the countries surveyed, the paper said. Some 75 percent of central Europeans and 80 percent of central and eastern Europeans are against the quota, it added.

In the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia, three countries of the Visegrád group, 53 percent expressed support for Hungary’s migrant policies, as against 27 percent who expressed disagreement. In the case of Germany and Austria, the ratios were in reverse.

The survey also showed that 62 percent of those asked were unaware of Soros or his role in migration. At the same time, he was well-known in Romania, and in international comparison, the better-known he is, the fewer people support his actions, the paper said.
