Head of Romania’s governing party assures Orbán of resolution for school situation

Liviu Dragnea, the leader of Romania‘s ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD), said on a social media site on Saturday that he had assured Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán that the situation of a school for ethnic Hungarians in Targu Mures (Marosvásárhely) would be resolved.

Dragnea agreed in a conservation on the telephone with Orbán that Romania would resolve the situation of the school, while Hungary would again support Romania’s accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which is a key foreign policy goal of Romania.

Hungary did not support Romania’s application for membership at a meeting of the OECD’s decision-making body in September because of the suspension of the operation of the Hungarian language Catholic school in Targu Mures.

Dragnea said he had explained to Orbán that the school’s “situation” was the result of a court ruling and was by no means an attack against either the Catholic church or the Hungarian minority. It is the duty of Romanian authorities to find an expedient, legal and lasting solution to the situation of the school, he added.

“I promised that we would find a solution,” Dragnea wrote.

He said Orbán had expressed his appreciation for the Romanians’ willingness for dialogue and promised that Hungary would support Romania’s accession to the OECD.

Dragnea did not clarify the solution for the school in his post on social media.

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó told MTI on Saturday that Hungary supports Romania’s accession to the OECD, after the head of the country’s governing party, Liviu Dragnea, made a promise to resolve the situation of the school for ethnic Hungarians in Targu Mures.

He confirmed that Dragnea had made the promise in a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Hunor Kelemen, head of the ethnic Hungarian RMDSZ party, was consulted on the decision, Szijjártó said.
