Goulash becoming a Hungarikum
The Collection of Hungarikums committee decided on Tuesday that some new entries will be added to the collection, namely the Hungarian goulash soup, the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit, and the porcelain of Hollóház, as VG.hu reported.
Minister of Agriculture Sándor Fazekas stated that the Hungarian Collection of Values was extended by the Pilgrimage of Csíksomlyó, Hungarian Folktales animated series, bobbin lace,, and the red deer of Gemenc.
The addition of goulash soup, which is a unique combination of meat stew (usually beef) and vegetable soup, was justified by its fame and popularity in catering and tourism.
The special Hungarian dish has been the symbol of the nation’s cuisine since the 16th century, when paprika was brought to Europe from America.
The Order of Saint Paul, named after the hermit Paul of Thebes, has been playing a significant role in the history of Hungarian people and culture, and made a great impact also on Croatian, German, Czech, Polish and Slovakian history. The 240-year-old porcelain of Hollóház received fame due to its unique and varied forms and decorations.
The Pentecost Pilgrimage of Csíksomlyó, which united the different branches of Christianity among the Hungarian people for more than six centuries, symbolizes the unity of the nation. The animated series of Hungarian Folktales helped preserving the ancient Hungarian tales in a modern form for multiple generations. The series has begun in 1980 and lasted until 2012, and it has 100 episodes spreading throughout nine seasons. The bobbin lace has always been an organic part of Hungarian folklore and clothing, while the red deer means an attraction for hunting tourism.
Fazekas highlighted that the state should care about Hungarikums and other national values, even in the means of professional or legal help, as well as financial support from the Hungarikum funds.
Counting the new additions, there are 70 Hungarikums and 161 entries in the Hungarian Collection of Values currently.
