Cranes depart from Budapest Airport construction site

The number of cranes working on the new pier of over 10 000 square meters at Budapest Airport has dropped from three to just one, as the contractor, KÉSZ Építő Zrt., continues to make good progress. The roof structure of the building will be completed by the end of January, with focus gradually shifting to works inside the building.

The steel structures of all seven boarding corridors are in place on the 2B side of Terminal 2.

These walkways will be used by passengers to access the aircraft directly during boarding, or for disembarkation during arrival. The steel structures of the corridors are supported by concrete columns, to which the mobile sections of the boarding bridges will be attached. Concrete staircases are also available, enabling boarding by bussing or on foot, in accordance with the requests of airlines.

KÉSZ Építő Zrt. and its subcontractors are now fitting insulation to the new pier as well as the façade panels covering it. The large glass windows will start to arrive at the end of January, paving the way for internal works and the installation of fixtures and fittings. Electrical works are continuing on both levels of the pier (there will be separate floors for boarding and disembarkation, with the arrivals corridor located below departures), with gypsum board separation walls already in place in many locations. Tiling is scheduled to commence at the end of January.

“Weather was kind to us so far, as we haven’t had freezing temperatures that might have significantly hindered construction works in January,” said Stephan Schattney, chief technical officer of Budapest Airport. He added, “Thanks to the progress of façade works, passengers at the airport can have a fairly precise impression of the contours of the building which will offer a glimpse into the life of the airport on both sides after handover, with a close-up view of servicing aircraft on the apron. Together with our partners we do our best to ensure that this new facility is opened to passengers and airlines by the original deadline, in the third quarter of 2018.”

The construction of the pier connected to Terminal 2B is one of the key components of Budapest Airport’s 5-year, 50-billion-HUF (approximately 160-million-EUR) airport development project called BUD 2020, completely self-financed by the airport operator, to be completed by the end of 2020.

The total cost of construction of Pier B is over 25 million EUR (HUF 7.8 billion).
