LMP goes to court over “Moscow visa scandal”
Budapest, May 2 (MTI) – The green opposition LMP party is going to court over the foreign ministry’s rejection of information about an international investigation into the “Moscow visa scandal”, the party’s co-leader said on Saturday.
Bernadett Szel said in a statement that the party had submitted a request for disclosure of data to the public about the ministry’s findings “in an internal investigation launched as a result of misuse at the Hungarian embassy in Moscow during the Orban governments”. The ministry has rejected this request “without an acceptable reason”, she added.
The foreign ministry has a stalling tactic whenever it should answer questions and while the government “wants to protect the country from the nonexistent threat of immigrants, it lays low when it receives questions about real security risks,” she said.
The ministry responded in a statement, saying it “adheres to all procedural requirements and respects court rulings”.
Former agricultural attache Szilard Kiss has been in pre-trial detention after it emerged in March that through the Hungarian visa centre in Moscow he had allegedly helped Russian prostitutes and criminals to Hungarian visas. LMP had earlier demanded that farm minister Sandor Fazekas answer questions before parliament’s national security committee and take responsibility for “turning a blind eye to Kiss’s dealings for years”.
