Oscar winning Szabó special guest at Cottbus Film Festival
Hungarian Oscar-winning director István Szabó will be celebrated as special guest at this year’s international film festival in Cottbus, the event’s director said on Monday.
The festival will show less frequently seen titles by Szabó, who turned 80 on February 18.
Szabó has been honorary president of the festival since 2000, Andreas Stein said.
Dietmar Woidke, minister-president of Brandenburg, said the state highly respects Szabó for his dedicated support for the festival over the past 18 years.
“As an honorary president, you are a supporter as well as an outstanding envoy of this event in the international arena,” he said.
The Cottbus festival will be held from November 6 to 11.
Szabó won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for Mephisto in 1982. The film tells the story of an actor and theatre director in Nazi Germany featuring Klaus Maria Brandauer as protagonist.
As we wrote few days ago, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán congratulated Oscar-winning director István Szabó on his 80th birthday in a letter on Thursday. Read more HERE.
