Weather service issues snow alert for most of Hungary – PHOTOS

The national weather service issued a snow alert for most of Hungary on Saturday and Sunday, and additional warnings have been put out in several counties due to rain and freezing rain.

Between 10 and 15 cm of snow was expected along a southwest-northeast line stretching from Nagykanizsa to Miskolc by Sunday morning, and between 5 and 15 cm of snow is forecast for the northwest. Borsod and the western half of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county see more than 20 cm of snow, the weather service said.

A first-degree (lowest) alert has been issued due to snowdrifts for Baranya, Fejér, Győr-Moson-Sopron, Komarom-Esztergom, Tolna, Vas and Zala counties while a second-degree alert has been issued in Budapest, Pest, Bács-Kiskun and Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok counties.

The highest alert is in place in Borsod-Abauj-Zemplén, Hajdú-Bihar, Heves and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg counties.

Alerts of heavy rain have been issued in Baranya, Somogy, Tolna and Zala counties, while freezing rain alerts have been issued in Bács-Kiskun, Békés, Csongrád, Hajdu-Bihar and Jasz-Nagykun-Szolnok counties.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Saturday paid a visit to the government’s operative staff over the snow alerts.

In a video broadcast by public news channel M1, the prime minister said he had instructed Interior Minister Sándor Pintér to mobilise all available manpower with a view to helping those who will be on the roads in spite of the alerts.

“We’re Hungarians, there’ll be some of us who will be [on the roads],” Orbán said.
