Deputy PM Semjén’s Swedish hunt scandal is worsening

Swedish minister Gustav Fridolin said that what Semjén did was not hunting. Reindeers are domesticated in the country, so it is like shooting cattle. Meanwhile, the owner of the killed reindeer said that he did not give permission for the hunt and sued the Hungarian Deputy PM.

Zsolt Semjén used to take part in luxurious hunts in Sweden for years in total secrecy.

He hunted there in 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017 mostly for reindeer, moose and fool-hen. Besides, the tours were organised with absolute care and strange precautionary measures. The price for the trips was horribly high, 4-5 million Swedish krona (EUR 500,000) for each. Semjén said that he just visited his relatives there and they hunted together. However, Magyar Nemzet discovered later that

a Hungarian businessman, József Farkas paid his trips.

He owns many hotels in Hungary, and interestingly, he won many tenders after Fidesz came to power in 2010. Moreover, one of his hotels was inaugurated by Deputy PM Semjén. In fact, József Farkas denies that he paid for the hunts.

The owner of the shot reindeer shows up

According to 444.hu, Niklas Jonsson, the owner of the reindeer Semjén hunted down said to the most popular Swedish newspaper, Aftonbladet that

he did not permit the Hungarian Deputy PM to kill his reindeer.

‘It is mine. The earmark can be seen on it. And I gave nobody permission to shoot it down.’ – he added. His father, Tobias said that there is no doubt that the killed reindeer was his son’s.

Jonsson said that he has approximately 300 animals. They are wandering on a huge territory, so he does not notice if one goes missing. Thus, he does not know when this specific reindeer disappeared. But he thinks that killing such reindeers is like breaking into somebody’s farm and shooting down their cattle.

Shooting a reindeer is regulated by strict laws in Sweden because there are no more wild reindeers in the country. Thus, the one he shot was probably domesticated.

According to 444.hu, the case was turned from the Västerbotten county police to the Swedish Prosecution Authority. They will decide whether the case which yet is regarded as simple stealing will be continued or not.

Meanwhile, Gustav Fridolin, the minister for education of Sweden arrived in Hungary to support the political campaign of LMP. He said that reindeers are domestic animals in Sweden like cattle in Hungary. Thus, shooting down a reindeer is not considered to be hunting.
