Hungarian FM expects pressure of migration to stay

Migration pressure is here to stay, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in an interview, adding that it was not a matter of indifference whether migrants were stopped at the Hungarian-Serbian border or at the Hungarian-Austrian border.

“If the Austrians stop the wave of migrants and the migrants are already in Hungary — which would be the case if there’s a change in government — then Hungary would turn into a collection camp for migrants,” he told public news channel M1 on Friday.

Szijjártó insisted that the dispute over the United Nations’ global migration package had taken an “absurd turn”. The proposal, he said, stated that new arrivals, regardless of their status, would be eligible for the same services as people who already live in the country for decades.

The majority of UN general assembly members are countries of origin for migrants or are transit countries, he said.

These countries “are trying to push the problem away while European countries, for some mysterious reason, look away”, he added.

In a separate interview with Kossuth Rádió, Szijjártó said it was not a basic human right to choose a country in which to live. Hungary will never accept “placing non-existing human rights above existing ones,” he added.

Civil organisations that exert influence by using “one-sided and mendacious information have a baffling influence” on the UN human rights committee, he said.

“If we do not fight the war connected with the migration package, then these initiatives will be passed through the global organisation like a knife through butter,” he added.
