Paks nuclear power plant company denies secret data compromised
Budapest, June 14 (MTI) – Responding to a report in tabloid Blikk that a laptop containing classified data related to the Paks nuclear power station had been stolen from a car parked in Budapest, the company that manages the power plant insisted that the laptop had the most up-to-date hardware and software protections.
Blikk reported on Saturday that one of the MVM Paks II Zrt manager’s laptop and several data storage devices had been taken from a car which was broken into. The data related to plans for the expansion of Hungary’s sole nuclear plant.
The Budapest police force has launched an investigation.
The company said in a statement on Sunday that it would not comment further until the police probe has been concluded.
The LMP and Egyutt parties have called for parliament’s national security committee to be convened to discuss the matter. Further, they have demanded that the government report on what took place.
News website nol.hu cited Attila Samu, the interior ministry’s press chief, as saying that the storage devices stolen from the manager’s car contained no classified information.
Nol.hu said given that the investigation is being conducted by the special case unit of the Budapest police force, the case is not being treated as a “simple vehicle break-in”. The website says the fact that neither the National Investigation Bureau nor the Constitutional Protection Office is involved in the investigation indicates that the stolen storage devices contained no “serious” classified data.
