Hungarian researchers study dormant Transylvanian volcano’s potential to reactivate
Budapest, June 15 (MTI) – A volcano in Mount Ciomatu in Transylvania could potentially reactivate despite being dormant for tens of thousands of years, a group of volcanologists from the Hungarian Academy of Scientists and ELTE University said.
Head of the research team Szabolcs Harangi told public news channel M1 on Monday that they have developed a new method to look into the magma chamber and researched ways to forecast possible volcano activity. The Ciomadul volcano last erupted around 32,000 years ago and there are currently no signs of reactivation — but there is still a possibility, he added.
The Hungarian team’s research will be presented in the Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research this autumn. Their methods can also be applied on other dormant volcanoes, of which there are many around the world, he said.
