Survey: One-third of Hungarians celebrate May 1
Around one-third of Hungarians take part in May 1 festivities; while young people tend to be drawn in by the entertainment on offer, the older generation typically favours the tradition that is the consumption of sausage and beer, a survey by Kutatópont released on Tuesday showed.
Among the survey’s respondents, altogether 32 percent said they regularly attend the Labour Day festivities, while 68 percent generally opt out, Kutatópont project manager Laura Rabcsánszki was quoted as saying. The Labour Day festivities are most popular with the 30-39 age group, of whom 48 percent said they regularly go out to celebrate May 1.
Among those who take part in the festivities, 59 percent said they normally go with their families, 40 percent with their friends and 30 percent with their partners.
Fully 26 percent of respondents said they are drawn to the events by the various fairs, while 25 percent are wooed by concerts. Fully 18 percent said they go for the beer and sausage and 10 percent said they were drawn in by the street party atmosphere.
The survey was conducted in March on a sample of 2,000 people.
