POLL: Fidesz fattens lead, Jobbik tops opposition

Budapest (MTI) – After nearly half a year, the ruling Fidesz-Christian Democrat alliance once again increased its voter support to maintain a stable lead over the opposition in June, a Szazadveg poll published in daily Napi Gazdasag on Saturday showed.

Radical nationalist Jobbik has become the strongest opposition force. The left wing as a whole stagnated while support for the Socialists continued to wane, the poll showed.

Among all voters, support for Fidesz stood at 30 percent. Jobbik was backed by 16 percent, the Socialists by 8 percent, LMP by 6 percent, the Democratic Coalition by 5 percent and Egyutt by 2 percent.

Among decided voters, Fidesz’s support stood at 40 percent, followed by Jobbik (27 percent), the Socialists (15 percent), DK (8 percent), LMP (6 percent) and Egyutt (2 percent), the poll showed.

The proportion of undecided voters was 32 percent.

According to the poll, 46 percent of Hungarian adults support right-wing parties (Fidesz and Jobbik) and 15 percent left-wing ones (Socialists, DK, Egyutt).

A total of 74 percent of respondents said the government should pursue a stricter immigration policy and nearly the same proportion supported the government’s plans to cut the personal income tax next year.
