According to szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu, seven Hungarian universities got a place on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018 list. The list compared the higher education institutes of 50 countries.
Hungary’s place on the list
Semmelweis University, the university for students of dentistry, medicine and pharmacy, scored 61st place which is 4 places better than last year. The University of Pécs was chosen as the best Hungarian university of the countryside and ranked 127th on the list.
The University of Pécs is proud to accept its place as the best university outside of Budapest as well as the 2nd best university in the entire country.
In the end, universities from 42 countries managed to get on the long list. From Hungary, Eötvös Loránd University ranked 123rd, Budapest University of Technology and Economics 154th and the University of Szeged 156th. The University of Debrecen and Corvinus University of Budapest also made it to the list.
The first two places of the list are taken up by UK universities. The University of Oxford is in the first place again this year while the University of Cambridge ranked two places higher than last year and managed to score second place. Several European universities made it to the top 200 of the list, with Germany and the Netherlands being in the lead. An interesting phenomenon is China’s steady improvement. According to the THE website: “the Asian giant is now home to two universities in the top 30: Peking and Tsinghua.”
The methodology of the list
According to the list’s website, they judged the universities based on:
“all of their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.”
The list started out 14 years ago. It takes into consideration 13 factors that indicate the performance of students and professors at the universities. These include the learning environment, the volume and reputation of the research and the income that results from it, the influence of the research (number of citations), the international outlook on staff, students and research and, last but not least, knowledge transfer.
Hungary also ranked high on happiness index and Internet freedom this year – check it out here!
