Change language:
The 19th of May is the Day against Obesity in Europe, which aims to broaden people’s knowledge about the severe aftermath this disease may cause. Népszava.hu revealed the current statistics on this issue for the occasion.
Statistics
According to WHO’s data from 2016, there were 1.9 billion overweight people around the globe. Sadly, this number is three times bigger than what it used to be in 1975. The first three countries on the list, which have the most overweight citizens, are the United States of America, Mexico, and New Zeland. Unfortunately, Hungary got the fourth place with an unbelievable high rate of obesity among adults: 28 to 31 percent. In 2014, 60 percent of the women and 65 percent of the men were having weight problems among the Hungarians. Additionally, the number of overweight children has been rapidly increasing. In 2014, 21 percent of the children living in Budapest and Kecskemét (aged 4 to 10) weighed more than recommended.

Obesity
Obesity is not only an aesthetic problem because it is related to cardiovascular diseases. These include high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, diabetes, hampered respiration, depression, gallstone, and certain types of cancer.
