Esztergom Vikings beats Budapest Exiles in rugby final
The Esztergom Vikings has defended its title, and became champion for the 13th time after beating Budapest Exiles in the final on Saturday, nemzetisport.hu reported.
After kick off, the Budapest Exiles dominated the game, and, as the referee ordered one Vikings player off the pitch due to high tackle, were on power play, which resulted in them scoring the first three points of the clash from a penalty kick. They played a number of unofficial matches against foreign opponents in the pre-season, and it was visible that they had become a solid team.
Initially, the Esztergom Vikings had difficulties with picking up the pace, and it even took them 27 minutes to take the lead after scoring the first try of the game. However, the Exiles scored another penalty before the half-time, thus it was the away team which could go to the dressing room with a one-point lead.
After the half-time, the game went on with both teams trying to overcome the other, but none of them had an opportunity to score. In the 56th minute however, the home team was favoured with a man advantage, as a result of which they scored a penalty that had been awarded to them following an offence committed by the opposing side.
This two-point lead promised a fierce fighting to the end of the clash, but the Exiles tried to reverse the result in vain, as the Vikings possessed the ball predominantly during the last minutes of the game. Thus, the final ended with Budapest Exile being at the wrong end of a 6–8 score line against Esztergom Vikings.
