Budapest (MTI) – Radical nationalist Jobbik expressed regret over the supreme court’s (Kuria) rejection of the party’s referendum initiative to ask voters if politicians’ family members should be obliged to publish their asset declarations.
In a statement sent to MTI on Saturday, Jobbik said that “we are convinced that transparency of the family assets of politicians is crucial for cleansing public life”. They added that they would propose an amendment to relevant laws to ensure that the referendum is not in conflict with any stipulations, and go ahead with the initiative.
On the other hand, Jobbik welcomed another decision by the Kuria, under which another referendum could be held to gauge public support for an opportunity for men to retire after 40 years of employment. That opportunity is currently granted to women only.
Jobbik noted that it had collected 250,000 signatures to support the latter referendum initiative, aimed at putting pressure on the government.
