List: Hungary’s top 10 fine dining restaurants
Fine dining is all about attention to detail, several-course menus, excellent service and the finest of wines and top shelf drinks. Here are Hungary’s top 10 fine dining restaurants based on TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards 2018. 10. Halászbástya Restaurant
The restaurant’s location is definitely one of its charms: at the Fisherman’s Bastion, behind the Matthias Church. The restaurant is open year-round with a variety of services. All of their tables offer a beautiful view of the amazing Budapest panorama. The highest observation terrace of the Fisherman’s Bastion is the Margaréta Terrace above the restaurant, and it is open from spring to autumn.
9. St. Andrea Wine & Gourmet Bar
St. Andrea Wine & Skybar is a premium restaurant and bar in the heart of Budapest: at Vörösmarty square. Its building is a Unesco Heritage World Site. The rooftop sky bar is open all year round. The restaurant’s gourmet chef is Barna Ádám. Besides the fine dining experience, the restaurant also offers amazing cocktails and wines, which guests can enjoy together with the beautiful view.
8. La Perle Noire Restaurant and Lounge
La Perle Noire Restaurant and Lounge is located in the fashionable villa district along Andrássy Avenue. Their website says:
“So characteristic of this neighborhood, a garden with comfortable garden furniture, a barbecue facility and a cocktail corner complements the modern-age interior of this relaxed place nicely.”
Their menu offers a spectrum of dishes ranging from traditional Hungarian dishes to gourmet French food. Perle Noire has its staples along with seasonal food like marinated foie gras with quince and boudin noir on toast and venison wrapped in savoy cabbage served with puréed chestnut, winter asparagus and mushroom. They also offer home-made bread, cocktails and a selection of local and foreign quality wines.
7. KOLLÁZS Brasserie & Bar
KOLLÁZS Brasserie & Bar overlooks the Chain Bridge and the Danube River. The Hungarian word kollázs means collage in English. The concept behind KOLLÁZS is to capture the dynamic spirit of the city: historic yet contemporary, timeless yet fresh, glamorous yet relaxed. The chef is Árpád Győrffy.
6. Onyx étterem
Onyx restaurant at Vörösmarty Square opened in 2007 with the aim to establish a restaurant with a high standard of international quality in Hungary. The restaurant is located adjacent to the renowned Café Gerbeaud, on the site of the former ‘Little Gerbeaud’. The chef is Ádám Mészáros who is working together with Gerbeaud Head chef Ágnes Tóth. There are Hungarian Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs competition winners in Onyx’s team. Onyx also managed to maintain its Michelin star since 2011. In fact, Onyx was the very first Hungarian restaurant to be awarded two Michelin stars.
5. Costes
Costes is one of the most popular fine dining restaurants in the capital. The restaurant was among those Hungarian establishments which managed to retain their Michelin stars in 2018. Besides being featured as the No. 5 best Hungarian restaurants, TripAdvisor users also ranked Costes as the 25th best restaurant in the world!
4. Baraka
Baraka fine dining restaurant opened in 2001. The restaurant was relocated to the heritage Dorottya Palace in 2015. The menu aims to capture the hearts of French-Asian cuisine lovers. The kitchen is led by Portuguese-Brazilian chef André Bicalho and Hungarian sous chef Balázs Besenyei. The restaurant has an open kitchen which offers gastronomic shows to its guests.
3. Costes Downtown

The special characteristic of the restaurant is its open kitchen, and the real gastro fanatics can book at the Chef’s Table. The main difference between Costes and Costes Downtown is that Costes Downtown has a more “bistro-like” environment with a relaxed atmosphere, lower prices and bigger capacity. The two restaurants have the same motto: “Quality gastronomy without compromises.”
2. Borkonyha
Borkonyha [WineKitchen] is one of the most prestigious restaurants in Budapest, retaining its Michelin star for a couple of years. The restaurant has a friendly and very light atmosphere. The menu contains Hungarian and international inspirations as well. There is an impressive wine selection too.
No. 1 Arany Kaviár Étterem
The restaurant opened in 1990 with four basic principles: impeccable raw materials, pronounced flavours, simplicity and harmony. Arany Kaviár aims to preserve these principles and maintain traditions ever since, but they also experiment with new, exciting flavours. In 2015, they added a lovely winter garden, and the restaurant was completely renovated in 2016. The chef is László Kanász, who joined the kitchen team as a young cook in 2009, and he was already the sous chef of the restaurant in 2011. He reformed the restaurant’s traditional dishes while preserving their core values.
