There will be no more swimsuit competitions on Miss America, just like Miss World no longer allows them either. But what about Hungarian beauty pageants? Ádám Fásy says it is not a good idea to change the rules. Edina Kulcsár, on the other hand, is happy that contestants will not be judged only by their physical appearance, zoom.hu reports.
Gretchen Carlson, chair of the Board of Trustees of the Miss America Organization said that “We are no longer a pageant; we are a competition.” These changes were inspired by the #MeToo movement.
Edina Kulcsár, who was crowned as Miss World Hungary in 2014, says that they are going in the right direction.
“There has not been a swimwear competition at the Miss World for quite some time now. This was one of the things that made me choose this pageant. I do not think that we need to highlight our physical characteristics anymore, our behavior and inner beauty should be more important” says Edina Kulcsár.
In the case of Miss Universe, the appearance, the shape of the body is really important, but in other competitions, even if there is a swimsuit part, it is more about modeling the swimsuit and how it works with your body rather than just the shape of the body. Edina Kulcsár says she can tell if a woman should sign up for Miss World or Miss Universe based on her appearance and knowing what these competitions are looking for.
Not even considering it
Éva Horváth, Miss World Hungary of 1998, has a different opinion.
“For me, Miss America is a typical swimsuit pageant, which makes it interesting that they would consider such a change. American competitors are usually more brave and show more of themselves. For me, the swimsuit competition is an intrinsic part of any beauty pageant. If you go to the swimming pool or Lake Balaton you will see the same.”
Éva Horváth coordinates the Miss Balaton beauty pageant, so we can be sure that there will be a swimsuit part there.
Ádám Fásy says that the swimsuit part of these competitions will never disappear
“I do not think that this decision would have the power to stop sexual harassment. If this is why they are doing this, they should consider banning swimsuits from the beaches too. Maybe women should start sunbathing in clothes that fully cover their body…” says Ádám Fásy, TV presenter, who started the Magyarok Világszépe Hungarian beauty contest in 2016.
He also says that the thinks that the swimsuit competitions will never disappear from beauty pageants, since they are an important part of the swimwear fashion.
Ádám Fásy mentions, that they already had a similar initiative in 2016. “When we organized the Magyarok Világszépe beauty pageant after skipping 10 years, it was held in front of the Reformed Church in Debrecen. Out of respect for the religious community, we did not want to hold a swimsuit competition. Since the audience was missing it, we decided to choose another place for next year’s pageant.”
