Budapest (MTI) – Hungary is ready to take in ethnic Hungarians from western Ukraine if they are mistreated, government office chief Janos Lazar said in an interview in the Saturday issue of daily Napi Gazdasag.
Lazar said the government’s most important goal was to ensure that Transcarpathian Hungarians can make a living in their homeland. He said the government would provide new benefits for the ethnic Hungarian community in Ukraine. The government will provide supplementary pay for teachers, funding for children’s meals and offer financial aid to local governments that need it, Lazar told the paper.
Lazar reiterated the government’s concern over recent armed clashes in western Ukraine’s Mukacheve (Munkacs). He said Hungary expects the Ukraine government to guarantee the safety of every Hungarian in Transcarpathia.
On the topic of migration, Lazar said the ongoing crisis was the “Waterloo of the entire European left”. He said the left had been campaigning for open borders “for decades”, arguing that migrants would make the entire continent “stronger and richer”, but is now forced into an “ideological retreat”. “It has become clear that economic migrants pose a serious threat to the quality of life of Europeans,” he said.
