Vona sees need for amending constitution to allow deployment of army

Budapest, September 3 (MTI) – Hungary’s constitution should be amended so as to prevent legal disputes over the deployment of armed forces to tackle mass migration, radical nationalist Jobbik party leader Gabor Vona told public radio on Thursday.

Although Jobbik would not challenge the deployment of soldiers on constitutional grounds, the left-wing parties would do so. By amending the constitution, however, parliament would minimise the chance of legal disputes and clear the ground for action, he said.

Asked if Jobbik supported the government’s planned legislation on handling mass migration, Vona expressed hope that compromises would be reached and his party’s proposals duly considered.

In a special session on Thursday and Friday, lawmakers are scheduled to discuss motions for amending the penal code and setting up transit zones along the Serbian border.
