La Liste 2019: 4 Hungarian among the 1,000 best restaurants in the world!

The most prestigious gastro list for 2019 is done: La Liste 2019 – the world’s best restaurant selection. Not only one, but four Hungarian restaurants made the list – three restaurants from Budapest and one from the countryside.

What is La Liste? It is the most prestigious gastronomical ranking in the world. The website says it all:

“Based on the compilation of hundreds of guidebooks and millions of online reviews, LA LISTE offers the best global restaurant selection handpicked by discerning food critics and expert guides.”

In order to create the 2019 list, with restaurants from 179 different countries in the world, 628 guides were used, and more than 40,000,000 reviews were scanned.

How does it work?

Restaurant reviews from guidebooks (recommended by famous chefs) and publications are put together in a giant database. Each review score is converted into a standard grade (ranging from 0 to 100) according to conversion tables specific to each guidebook. First, every guidebook that is used is given a “trustworthiness index” ranking from 0 (not to be trusted at all) to 10 (very trustworthy). For the restaurants themselves, the average of all standardised review scores is calculated and weighted by each source’s trustworthiness index. Moreover, online customer reviews are also integrated: these get 10% weighting in the final “La Liste score”.

Restaurants with above 80,00 La Liste scores could make the final La Liste 2019.

The top Hungarian restaurants

As Forbes reports, four Hungarian restaurants received the honour of being included in the list. The three restaurants from Budapest are Onyx (with 83,00 points), Costes (with 80,50 points), and Borkonyha (with 80,00 points); and the one restaurant from the countryside is Anyukám Mondta (with 80,00 points).

Onyx restaurant opened in 2007. It is located on Vörösmarty Square, adjacent to the renowned Café Gerbaud, on the site of the former Little Gerbaud. Onyx was the very first Hungarian restaurant to be awarded two Michelin stars.

Costes was also awarded a Michelin star, both in 2017 and 2018. Moreover, it was ranked as the 25th best restaurant in the world on TripAdvisor.

Borkonyha is a restaurant that has also retained its Michelin star for a couple of years. The restaurant is specialised in Hungarian and international inspirations and an impressive wine selection.

Interestingly, the fourth Hungarian restaurant featured on La Liste is located in the countryside, in a tiny town called Encs (near Miskolc). Anyukám Mondta is extremely popular among locals and tourists alike. It is a family-owned high-quality restaurant.
