Police seal off border at Roszke – UPDATE – PHOTOS
Budapest, September 14 (MTI) – Police sealed off the borders at Roszke crossing point on the border with Serbia at 4.30 pm on Monday, MTI’s correspondent said from the site.
The section of the border in question is the point most affected by illegal migrants coming from Serbia. Migrants will no longer be allowed through the point where the Szeged-Subotica railway line intersects the joint border and the border fence.
Through this gap in the barrier, thousands of migrants entered the country everyday. They will now be returned to Serbia.
A few dozen migrants were seen waiting on the Serbian side of the border. Police were trying to convince them to turn back to Serbia, the correspondent said.
Meanwhile, the fence is being completed with razor wire. Police are monitoring the area with helicopters and mounted police are also present, the correspondent said.
The two camps set up near the border for immigration procedures are now almost empty and fewer migrants were seen at the nearby registration point.
The majority of migrants who have been registered are waiting at Roszke railway station for trains going to the city of Gyor, in north-western Hungary, the correspondent said.
Authorities have also prepared a train wagon fitted with a razor-wire frame to block the border on the Szeged-Horgos railway line, a favourite crossing point for migrants. This part was not sealed off earlier due to ongoing cross-border train services which were suspended in late August. This affected services between Szeged on the Hungarian and Subotica (Szabadka) on the Serbian side. The train carriage will be used as a temporary measure before a mobile gate is built, staff of the national railways MAV said earlier.
Around 200 illegal migrants were waiting at the old Roszke border point on Monday evening, and the Hungarian authorities were allowing small groups of 5-10 people into the country on foot through a border gate, MTI’s correspondent said, adding that the situation was calm. Buses were on standby to transport arrivals.
A law on tightening up border protection controls will come into force at midnight.
