Defence minister calls up volunteer military reservists to help deal with migrant crisis
Budapest, September 19 (MTI) – Defence Minister Istvan Simicsko on Saturday called up some of Hungary’s volunteer military reservists to help deal with the migrant crisis, the ministry told MTI.
Simicsko made the decision on the advice of chief of staff Tibor Benko. The ministry said there are more than 100 volunteers currently on active duty in Hungary.
The volunteers will primarily be used to substitute soldiers who have been deployed to the border, the ministry said, adding that apart from border protection itself, the volunteers may be assigned duties on the border.
Hungary’s defence force has over 5,500 reservists.
Simicsko said last week that a total of 4,300 soldiers have completed border protection duties on Hungary’s southern border.
