Ecofarming offers solution for global food crisis, says Greenpeace Hungary official

Ecofarming could be a solution for the global food crisis, a Greenpeace Hungary campaign manager said on Wednesday, ahead of the UN World Food Day.

The main pillars of ecological farming include knowledge-intensive production, biodiversity, organic crop protection and support for rural producers, said Katalin Rodics, agricultural campaign manager for central and eastern Europe.

Food produced in ecological farming would be enough to feed up to 15 billion people, she said.

Gabor Uveges, the mayor of Hernadszentandras, in north-eastern Hungary, said his village has been producing vegetables in organic farming for the past five years and has created the brand BioSzentandras for promoting these products and the village.

World Food Day is marked on October 16, the day when the UN founded its Food and Agriculture Organisation in 1945, Balazs Tomori of Greenpeace Hungary noted.
