Hungary has the World’s 2nd fastest runners
In a recently published study, Hungary ranks as the World’s 2nd fastest runners on the 5-kilometer distance with an average finish time of 27:50 minutes. Hungarian women have an average finish time of 29:28 minutes, and the men come in with an average finish time of 25:21 minutes.
On the 10-kilometer distance, Hungary comes in as the 28th fastest country with an average finish time of 59 minutes. On the half marathon distance, Hungary comes in as the 27th fastest country in 2:04:43 and finally number 24 on the marathon in 4:19:39.
The report also concluded that for the first time in history, there are now more female than male runners.
In 2018, 50.24% of all runners in the World were women.
Also, for the first time in history, there’s a decline in race participation. Since 2016, the number of runners finishing races has decreased by 13%, and peaked with 9.1 million finishers in 2016.
The study was done by Jens Jakob Andersen, Statistician, Ivanka Nikolova, Ph.D. in mathematics from RunRepeat.com and in collaboration with the International Association of Athletics Federations and presented in China at The Global Running Conference.
The study is based on 107.9 million race results from more than 70,000 race events from 1986 to 2019, and it is by far the largest study on race results in history.
