Budapest (MTI) – The renovated bell and look-out tower of Budapest’s famous Matthias Church in the castle district is now open to the public, the church’s priest said.
The tower was only open for visits to the gentility ever since it was built by Frigyes Schulek in 1894, Laszlo Sullei told a press conference on Wednesday. The church received ten million forints (EUR 32,000) from the City of Budapest in 2012 towards renovation costs and the work was completed in June this year, he said. The viewing tower is at 46.7 metres from the ground and 197 steps are leading up to it, Sullei said.
Only 15 people can visit the tower at any one time with two guides, Rita Lung, head of marketing for the church, said. Tours start every hour seven days a week from 10am to 5pm. A visit usually lasts 45 minutes and tickets cost 1,400 forints (EUR 4.5) or 1,000 forints for students and pensioners, she added.
