Budapest court rules in Jobbik’s favour in libel suit
Budapest, November 4 (MTI) – A Budapest municipal court has ruled that the ruling Fidesz party must pay radical nationalist Jobbik 700,000 forints and apologise to the party for making false claims in connection with the party, Jobbik said on Wednesday.
Fidesz had claimed that Robert Kiss, the one-time leader of the New Hungarian Guard, a paramilitary outfit, was linked to Jobbik and also that Jobbik supported human smuggling, Adam Mirkoczki, the party’s spokesman, told a press conference.
Jobbik will not tolerate such claims, Mirkoczki said, adding that Fidesz would “wind up with similar papers” for other smears against Jobbik, such as calling it Simicska’s party, Bela Kovacs’s party and a party of oligarchs.
Lajos Simicska is a businessman and media baron who fell out with Viktor Orban, the prime minister. Bela Kovacs is a Jobbik MEP whose immunity has been suspended so he can answer accusations he spied on the European Union on behalf of Russia.
Mirkoczi said that in 2013 the former welfare state secretary, Miklos Soltesz, had been compelled to apologise and pay a fine for defaming Jobbik.
