Effective since September 16, Austria’s border control has been extended twice, on September 24 and again on October 19. The ministry justified the decision by saying that the safety of border crossers cannot be guaranteed without security checks due to the repeated arrival of refugees. According to EU rules, internal border control may be in effect for ten days and can be exceeded for a maximum of 60 days, but the European Commission must approve it.
The interior ministry said on Wednesday that 200 civil servicemen will be made available for relief organizations until the beginning of November, and will also provide an additional 1800 people in response to the refugee situation, if necessary. Wednesday’s edition of the Austrian newspaper Die Presse reported that the Social Democrat mayor of Wagna, a Styrian settlement, criticized the Austrian Chancellor in a letter. He complained of disastrous conditions along the border, adding that the system works only because enthusiastic people perform the tasks should not be done by them. According to the mayor, the government failing to act could put human lives at risk. He called on the Chancellor to assume the responsibility for the situation.
Seventeen thousand asylum applications were submitted to Austria in 2013, 28,000 in 2014 and 63,000 so far this year. The government expects more than 85,000 applications by the end of the year. According to ministry data, more than 10,000 asylum applications were submitted in October, compared to 3,000 submitted in March.
