Orthodox youth centre inaugurated in Ukraine with Hungarian support

An Orthodox Church youth centre built with the support of the Hungarian government and the Hungarian community of Fényeslitke, in the northeast of the country, was inaugurated in the Ukrainian village of Tukholka (Tuholka) on Sunday.

Hungary’s ambassador to Ukraine, István Íjgyártó, delivered a speech at the ceremony.

The youth centre will strengthen the local community, serving as a place to congregate and meet, Íjgyártó said.

The centre will provide space for Sunday school and choir practice, and it can even be used for film screenings and as a hostel, he added.

The leaders and residents of Tukholka played an instrumental role in helping to relocate and collect the parts of a monument erected on the Verecke Pass in 1896 to mark the thousand-year anniversary of the Hungarians’ arrival in the Carpathian Basin that was removed by Soviet authorities in the 1960s.

The monument was donated to Hungary, restored and erected at a venue in the Ópusztaszer Heritage Park, in southeast Hungary.
