Orthodox church to be built in Hévíz
The cornerstone of a new church to be built by the Hungarian Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church was laid in Hévíz, in western Hungary, on Friday.
Hévíz Mayor Gábor Papp told MTI that the Orthodox church named in honour of The Life Giving Spring of the Mother of God icon would be built at costs of 400 million forints.
The Hungarian government in 2017 allocated 2.4 billion forints (EUR 7.25m) for the revamp of three Orthodox churches and the construction of a new church, he said.
The latter will be built in Hévíz because of the high number of Russian-speaking Orthodox residents and Russian and Ukrainian tourists attracted by the spa town, he added.
The Hungarian Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church has been celebrating masses in the town for many years, he said.
The 12-metre tall building with a characteristic onion dome is planned to be built in one year, he added.
