Budapest (MTI) – The 71st anniversary of the liberation of Budapest’s ghetto was marked by the ghetto’s memorial wall by the Dohany Street Synagogue on Sunday.
Slomo Kover, Executive Rabbi of the Unified Hungarian Jewish Congregation (EMIH), told the event organized by EMIH that the liberation of the ghetto should also highlight the importance of “not locking ourselves away in an intellectual ghetto, not surrounding ourselves by walls”.
At a separate ceremony in Budapest, development ministry state secretary Janos Fonagy expressed the Hungarian government’s and the Hungarian people’s gratitude to Raoul Wallenberg who was captured 71 years ago by Soviet soldiers. Working in Budapest, the Swedish diplomat saved the lives of thousands of Hungarian Jews during the Second World War.
