Hungarian, Slovak presidents remember military plane crash

Budapest, January 19 (MTI) – Hungarian President Janos Ader and his Slovak counterpart, Andrej Kiska, paid tribute to the victims of a Slovak military plane crash that occurred in north-eastern Hungary, near the Slovak border, nine years ago.

Forty-two people died when a Slovak military aircraft crashed near Hejce in the evening on this day in 2006. Only one soldier survived the accident. The plane was carrying Slovak peacekeeping troops from Pristina in Kosovo to Kosice in Slovakia.

The two presidents laid wreaths at the obelisk and 42 traditional carved wooden poles honouring the victims at the crash site.

At another commemoration ceremony held at a memorial honouring the victims in the city centre of Hejce, the heads of state said that the accident’s victims had chosen professions serving their country.
