Romanian police investigate 10 deaths related to counterfeit medical alcohol

Romanian police conducted searches on some merchants’ homes and company headquarters in and around Bucharest on Sunday, after 10 people from a northeastern county died of counterfeit medical alcohol.

Seven people were taken to hearings by the police following the searches.

Preliminary investigation revealed that these deaths would have been caused by methyl alcohol intoxication, as samples taken by the police from local shops show that alcohol contains a large proportion of methanol that should not be present.

The deceased were residents of the rural areas of Iasi County, and the earliest death occurred on April 15.

“From the investigations carried out so far, it was found that a company from Iasi would have purchased medical alcohol from Bucharest, and later would have distributed it to several companies in Iasi County,” showed a release of Iasi County Police Inspectorate.

Two businessmen from Bucharest are targeted by the investigation, as they are suspected of producing and distributing the medical alcohol containing deadly methanol, according to local media.
