Did pro-government oligarch Lőrinc Mészáros become the second biggest employer in Hungary?
Based on an answer from the Mészáros group, they employ more than 25 thousand people, which means that after the Hungarian state, they are the second biggest employer in the country.
According to G7, the Hungarian Post (Magyar Posta Ltd.) has 30 thousand employees while 18 thousand people work for both Volánbusz (responsible for long-distance bus transport in Hungary) and the Hungarian Railways (MÁV). Meanwhile, in the private sector, Spar Magyarország Ltd. is the biggest employer, having more than 14 thousand co-workers. Based on the information of the economy journal, there are fewer than 10 companies in Hungary that have more than 10 thousand employees.

Furthermore, if we take into consideration all the subsidiaries of the holdings present in Hungary, we can state that OTP and Mol also have more than 25 thousand employees. Based on their annual report, the Hungarian oil company gives work for more than 26 thousand people, while almost 35 thousand people work for the Hungarian bank. However, many of these people do not work in Hungary since both OTP and Mol are present in many countries. As a result, G7 calculated that, for example,
Mol has approximately 10 thousand employees in Hungary.
Lőrinc Mészáros also has interests beyond the borders, but in his case, the rate is not that balanced as in the case of Mol or OTP, so most of the employees of his group work in Hungary.
The two flagships of his empire in this respect are the MKB Bank with 2,400 employees and the Hunguest Hotels with 1,900 people working for them. However,
Mészáros would like to buy a Hungarian energy supplier,
Tiszántúli Áramhálózati Ltd., which is also a company giving work for more than 1,000 people. The deal was announced last year, but nobody has shared any details about it as of yet. Interestingly, even though Mészáros wins most of the public procurements in the construction sector in Hungary, his construction companies employ less than 1,000 people. This is because they have subcontractors to do many parts of the work.
Lőrinc Mészáros and his family have interests in hundreds of Hungarian companies.
