Hungary receives EU support for the project of the new railway tunnel in Budapest
Hungary has signed the European Union’s grant agreement for the feasibility study of a new railway tunnel in Budapest, connecting Kelenföld and Nyugati Railway Station.
According to Dávid Vitézy, the CEO of Budapest Development Centre, “this is a significant milestone, even if we know that we have many, many years of work ahead of us to realise it.”
In Budapest and its surroundings, two-thirds of carbon dioxide emissions are linked to road traffic.
“The sustainable alternative can only be track-based transport and the development of the railways coming from the suburbs. This requires significantly more capacity and better service,” commented Dávid Vitézy.
As Hungarian news portal Portfolio reports, several instances of railway development have been announced these days (Újszász, Lajosmizse, Veresegyháza), the goal of which is to allow more frequent services, but this is also dependent on the expansion of the capacity of the Nyugati Railway Station and the tracks leading there.
More suburban trains require larger head stations or the transition to a connected station system instead of a dead-end-like operation – which is why the plan to build a railway tunnel under the Danube came up again.

The EU, aka in Orbananas as the big cow to milk, will never let Hu autocrats down.
The begging bowl out again for EU money – the government could easily afford this project without scrounging off of the EU were it not for that ludicrous, unnecessary Budapest-Belgrade white elephant of a railway line.
Hungary should stop asking for or accepting money from the E.U. There will come a time they will regret it. The line is needed but stop spending money you don’t have. Figure out how to do it with money in the Hungarian budget or wait until you actually have the money. Biggest mistake Hungary ever made in the past 50 years was joining the European Union.
#Jack: Without EU money, how else would the senior government figures line their family and friends pockets?
Paulus, The same way they did before EU money was available. You are really really not smart enough to see that political corruption is a global problem? There is no such thing as an honest politician. The dishonest ones would never allow an honest candidate to be elected. GROW UP Paulus, like him or not Orban and friends are better for Hungarians than ANY of the other candidates and parties.
