No more stag parties in Hungary?!
The new Airbnb restrictions have a decisive influence on short-term apartment rentals in Hungary; according to which, the number of people booking the same apartment via Airbnb is maximised to 16.Â
Since last year, Airbnb has been trying to eliminate properties where short-term tenants are disturbing the local community with loud parties. This year, the company has come to a drastic decision –
Airbnb worldwide bans the organisation of parties and events in properties rented on its platform.
As the Hungarian news portal Pénzcentrum reports, due to lax of regulations concerning parties and nightlife in several countries, many accommodations turned into pubs in the previous years. Based on the announcement published this Monday, since last year, the company has been trying to eliminate properties where short-term tenants are disturbing the local community with loud parties. Furthermore, this is not the only area where restrictions have been introduced.
In the future, the number of people renting the same accommodation at the same time via Airbnb is maximised to 16.
In the past, hosts could authorise such events; furthermore, the Airbnb interface could be explicitly filtered for homes where events were allowed to be held. Due to the pandemic, this possibility was abolished a few months ago; however, for public health reasons, it is now wholly forbidden to organise parties at the accommodations booked on Airbnb.
The company is still working on detailed rules that would still allow events to be organised for larger buildings.

“Based on the announcement published this Monday….” – actually, Airbnb made this announcement on the 20th of August, which was a Thursday, not last Monday.
The 16 person limit applies to a single property; properties capable of accommodating 16 people (or more) tend to be large houses rather than apartments and the majority of these, irrespective of country, tend not to be in city centres. Stag and Hen parties usually prefer to be in or very close to city centres in order to take advantage of bars and nightlife.
Another point to consider is that large stag/hen parties are often distinct groups of friends who usually prefer their group to have separate accommodation from another (ie, a school friend group stay in one apartment, a work group of friends in another) so certainly in European capitals, large groups nearly always rent several Airbnbs and do not look for a ‘mega sized’ apartment. In Budapest, to take but one city, there are a number of buildings where there are a number of Airbnb’s all owned by the same owners and a large stag/hen party tend to try and rent several of these so that they are in close proximity to others in the group. Therefore, the premise of this article, that stag/hen parties could become a thing of the past in Hungary due to Airbnb restrictions is palpable nonsense.
